Parks

The St. Croix Valley’s park system offers visitors some truly remarkable opportunities to experience the Valley’s natural and scenic wonders.   State Parks, regional parks, county parks, nature centers and many community parks provide thousands of acres of parkland to enjoy.  Beaches, bluffs, scenic vistas, hiking and biking trails, campgrounds, boat launches, picnic areas, and more can all in found in the parks of the St. Croix Valley.

National Scenic River Way

The Saint Croix National Scenic River Way extends for some 250 miles along both sides of the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers.  Excellent fishing, canoeing and wildlife watching abound.

State Parks

Minnesota

Wild River State Park – Located along 18 miles of the beautiful St. Croix River, the park offers camping, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, interpretive programs, self-guided trails, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Interstate Parks – For more than 100 years, the rock faces, scenic trails, cliff climbing, riverside camping, and canoeing/kayaking have kept visitors coming back to the twin Interstate Parks in Taylors Falls, MN and St. Croix Falls, WI.

Afton State Park – Grand oaks and delicate prairie flowers grace the rugged, rolling landscape of Afton State Park.  Trails traverse remnant and restored prairies, wind down deep ravines and rise up on grassy ridge tops and bluffs overlooking the St. Croix.

William O’Brien State Park – Near Marine on St. Croix, MN the park has two campgrounds with a variety of sites.  Hiking trails offer quiet exploration of the park’s rolling wooded  .

Wisconsin

Interstate Parks – For more than 100 years, the rock faces, scenic trails, cliff climbing, riverside camping, and canoeing/kayaking have kept visitors coming back to the twin Interstate Parks in Taylors Falls, MN and St. Croix Falls, WI.

Willow River State Park – Located in Hudson, WI., the park offers a trout stream, sand beach, prairie remnants, a nature center and campsites on almost 3,000 acres of rolling countryside with the Willow Falls and Willow River Gorge.

Kinnickinnic State Park – Located south of Hudson, WI., the park offers an overlook of the sandy delta where the “kinni” river, a world class trout stream meets the St. Croix.

Regional Parks – Minnesota

Lake Elmo Park Preserve – Offering 2200 acres of rolling prairie and forest.  The park has over 20 miles of trails groomed for Cross-country skiing, hiking, equestrian use and biking.

St. Croix River Bluffs – Nestled between Afton and Hastings, MN. with expansive valley views.  The park offers campgrounds, hiking trails, boat launch and fishing pier.

Private Campground – Wisconsin

Apple River Family Campground – Located in Somerset, WI. the Apple River, tributary of the St. Croix is known for river tubing and camping.

Nature Centers

Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center

Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center – Located within a half hour of the Twin Cities, near the confluence of the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers, Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center provides a unique opportunity for you to learn and explore the outdoors. With property on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the scenic St. Croix River, the Center has been able to preserve its wildlife habitat. Hiking trails wind throughout the tall pines, oak savanna, restored prairies, wooded ravines, around the apple orchard, and along the river of the 425 acre Main Campus. With over 10 miles of hiking trails, three-and-a-half which are paved to accommodate persons with mobility limitations, you will see a vast variety of plant and animal communities. Wildlife abounds in the restored prairie and wooded bluffs on the 300-acre Wisconsin Nature Preserve.
